Phillip L. Martin Passes On


Phillip L. Martin "Chief GrayFox", 75 of 41 Lancaster Avenue, West Springfield, Massachusetts, died Saturday (1/11/2003) in Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield, MA he grew up in Brimfield, MA and has lived in West Springfield, MA for the past 25 years.

He was the Food Service Supervisor for Monson Developmental Center and retired in 1989. He was known as Chief Gray Fox, Chief of the Southern New England Abenaki Tribe.

He served in the United States Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American Legion in Agawam, MA. He was a trustee and member of the Mittineague Congregational Church and a trustee of the AFSCME Union.

He leaves his wife Phyllis (Cristofori) Martin; a on Paul M. Martin of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters Doreen St. Laurent of Virginia Beach, VA, Debra Martin of Union, CT; two stepsons David F Sabourn of West Springfield, MA, John D. Sabourn of Fairhaven, MA; a step daughter Cynthia A . Sullivan of Lagrangeville, NY; a brother Louis Martin of Palmer, MA; fourteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. His brother Donald Martin died in 1981.

The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Wednesday (1/15/2003) at 12 noon followed by a spring burial in Brimfield Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday (1/14/2003) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the VNA and Hospice of Western New England, 50 Maple St., P.O. Box 9058, Springfield, MA.
