Ik8ldimek Legal Clinic

The Cowasuck Band of the Pennacook People are pleased to sponsor a Native American Indian Legal Clinic.

Ik8ldimek (People Defend Each Other)

The goals of the Ik8ldimek Legal Clinic are to ensure that the basic human - civil and religious rights are protected for all Native American Indian prisoners, as guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

Our legal clinic intends to provide basic Information & Referral (I&R) services to aid and assist incarcerated Native American Indian men and women and their families whose civil rights and their right to practice their religious beliefs are being violated.

The I& R services to be provided include, but are not limited to the defense of:

RELIGIOUS RIGHTS

  • Securing a Time and Place for Cultural and Spiritual Gatherings,
  • Access to Spiritual Advisors,
  • Sacred Items for Ceremonial use,
  • Hair Length - having long hair,
  • Possession of Medicine Bags & Personal Sacred Items,
  • Sacred Purification Rights & Sweat Lodges,
  • Books, Newsletters, and Library Resources about and from Native American Indian sources.

CIVIL RIGHTS

  • Issues of Visitation,
  • Rights to Receive and Send Mail,
  • Use of Corporal Punishment,
  • Use of Segregation as Punishment

The Cowasuck Band has incorporated a nonprofit social and cultural services organization called COWASS North America. It is nationally incorporated, (FEID# 223229024) and is registered as a 501(c)3 organization with the IRS.

The social services work that the Cowasuck Band performs is an indication of the commitment that we as a family support not only our own Native People but that we support the community and region around us. In our society we are judged not by what wealth we hold but by what wealth we can give to others; this is our way of life.

ALL OF CREATION MUST BE GIVEN EQUAL RESPECT AND REVERENCE
